Volunteered in 1813 for the foreign service of the Church Missionary Society, the first Anglican clergyman to do so. Worked in countries round the Mediterranean, 1815-20; in Syria and the Holy Land, 1823-4. Clerical Secretary of the Church Missionary Society, 1832-40. Lecturer at St Mary Aldermanbury; at St Peter's, Cornhill; at Holy Trinity, Clapham. V. of St John's, Clapham Rise, London, 1851-5. Author, Christian Researches in the Mediterranean and Researches in Syria and the Holy Land; verses; religious works. Married, June 26, 1815, Martha, dau. of John Whiting, of Little Palgrave, Norfolk. Died Feb. 20, 1855, at Clapham Rise. Buried in Lewisham churchyard.
