Baptismal evidence suggests that the curate of Normanton and the minister of Kirkstall are the same person. According to The Gentleman's Magazine vol. 11 (Feb 1839), p.215 he died on 18 Dec 1838 - 'from lock jaw, in consequence of an accident received by the upsetting of his gig at Burley, near Leeds, age 56, the Rev. Robert Hodgson, Perpetual Curate of St. Stephen's, Kirkstall, to which he was presented in 1829, by the Vicar of Leeds, it being then we believe a new church. After a prolonged investigation, the jury returned a verdict of Manslaughter against the hackney coachman who occasioned the accident.
