Chaplain to the duke of the Devonshire and son of a Huguenot refugee, Joseph de La Plaigne, who had arrived in England in 1702 in his sixties. He owed his chaplaincy (to his godfather) to a connection forged by his uncle, the soldier Huguenot Lieut Armande de Bastide who fought at the Battle of the Boyne and went on to become standard bearer in the Household cavalry
