Michs. 1824; Craven Scholar, 1827; B.A. 1828; M.A. 1831; D.D. 1861. Fellow, 1829. One of the most distinguished classical scholars ever known in the University. Ord. 1830. Assistant Master at Rugby, 1830-8, under Dr Arnold, who thought highly of him. R. of Ayot St Peter, Herts., in 1837 (Index Eccles.; not found elsewhere). Head Master of King Edward's School, Birmingham, 1838-47. Hon. Canon of Worcester, 1847. First Bishop of Manchester, 1847-69. Promoted the Manchester Free Library, opened in 1852. Married Dec. 25, 1830, Susannah, elder dau. of George Penrice, of Elmbridge, Worcs., and had issue two daughters. Author, Sermons and of fragments attributed to Isaac Barrow, D.D., collected and edited from the MSS. in the University and Trinity College Libraries, 1834; these manuscripts turned out to be spurious; Suggestions for a practical use of the Papal aggression. Died Dec. 24, 1869, at his residence, Mauldeth Hall, near Manchester. Bequeathed his fine library to Owens College Manchester; his widow also left £1000 to provide two annual prizes for encouraging the study of the New Testament in Greek. (St Paul's Sch.
