Venn: Formerly HW Burt, son of John Burt of Boley Hill, Rochester (and of Harriet, dau. of William Champneys, Usher of the Black Rod and Commissioner of Revenue, Ireland); adm. Fell.com CHRISTS, Cambridge 14 June 1788; matric. 1789; BA 1793, MA 1796. Whilst undergrad established expensive club of 12 members and spent much money on entertainments "but left Cambridge free from debt". (See Gunning, II 152-6). Ordained deacon Gloucs. 1796; curate Ulcombe, Kent; V. of Leigh, Lancs 1798-1800; R. St Margarets, Canterbury 1803-6; V St Mary Breden 1806-21; V. Welton with Melton, Yorks 1807-45; R. Badsworth, Yorks 1821-45. Died there 18 Feb. 1845, aged 74.
(Great nephew of Henry Champneis of Vintners in Boxley, Kent, part owner of Westenhanger estate, devised to the said HW Burt in 1781 having obtained for him a Privy Seal to take surname and arms of Champneis in 1778.)
