prob. Foster: Ellary, Anthony, s. John, of Salisbury, Wilts, pleb. Christ Church, matric. 31 Oct., 1623, aged 19; B.A. 10 Dec., 1623, vicar of Salisbury St. Martin, Wilts, 1632, until sequestered 1645. See Foster's Index Eccl. & Add. MS. 15,670, p. 34.
This man causes some problems, not least about his name. His ordination as deacon in 1623 as Ellary states he is BA from Christ Church, whereas his subscription for the same states Hart Hall; no other records give his college. His institution as V. of Salisbury St Martin in 1632/3 (as Ellary) was subject to an Exchequer and Privy Council case (see Wiltshire VCH vol vi under St Martin's Church) and he was instituted again in 1635 as R. as Hill, while his subscription read Hillary. There is no doubt that these are all the same man.
