Foster confuses almost completely this man with another of this name who was a prominent puritan and member of the Westminster Assembley of Divines, and also 1634-57 V of Battersea (Surrey) - a totally different background etc.
The only part of the Foster entry which appears correct for the man below is: R of Bourton on the Water, Glos., 1629 until sequestered 1646 by Westminister Assembley and from rectory of Alvescott, Oxon 1647.
The Victoria County History for both Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire are more helpful. They give him as son (3rd) of Sir Thomas (Bart.) and Lady Hester Temple of Stowe, Bucks; "involved in scandalous legal suits with his brother in law, his nephew and his parish clerk" (at Bourton); held another benefice in Oxon.; was chaplain to Prince of Wales; Charles I lodged with him; resisted sequestration in both his benefices 1646; restored in 1661; generally disliked by parishioners in his Gloucs. benefice. Some of the confusion with others of the Temple family of Stowe family are resolved in Henry B. Hoff "The Temple Family of Stowe" in the Genealogist 2 (1981) and Temple Prime "Some Account of the Temple Family" 4th edn. NY 1899.
