The Oxford DNB describes this man as being of the Tomkins family which produced more musicians than any other English family; that he was precentor of Gloucester Cathedral, descended from the Tomkinses of Lostwithiel, Cornwall; himself a madrigal writer, father of the great Thomas Tomkin, composer; wrote an account of the Bishops of Gloucester. Had 6 sons (Peregrine, Nathaniel, Nicholas, Thomas, John and Giles - the last two, in addition to Thomas, being prominent musicians.)
The Welsh Biography on line (www.wbo.llgc.org.uk) accessed 2 June 2014) gives his dates c1545 to c 1626/7; organist and and precentor (chaunter) of Gloucester; in 1577 he had been master of choristers and organist at St David's cathedral; married 1) Margaret Poher or Pore, 2) Ann, dau. or sister of Richard Hargest of Penarthur Farm, St Davids; later took holy orders and became canon of Gloucester and V of St Mary de Lode, Gloucester
