VENN: Adm. pens. (age 19) at TRINITY, June 3, 1661. Matric. 1661; Scholar, 1664; B.A. 1664-5; M.A. 1668. Ord. deacon and priest (Peterb.) Sept. 22, 1667. One of these names V. of Foxton, Cambs., 1669. R. of Walsoken, Norfolk, 1693-1717. Buried June 2, 1717. Monumental inscription there, by his s. Thomas (1710), Archbishop of Canterbury. Probably father of William (1708)(ID 16678). (Blomefield, IV. 727.)
According to 'A General History of the County of Norfolk', vol.2 (1829) the monument reads, "Near this place lye interred the bodies of John Herring, MA thirty six years rector of this parish, aged sevety five, buried June 2nd 1717; and of Martha his wife, daughter of Thomas Potts, of St Gregory's London, aged forty four, buried January 3rd, 1704. This monument is erected in grateful memory of his excellent parents, by their only son, Thomas, lord archbishop of Canturbury, 1750".
