Essex RO: D/DHt Z42 pp.107-8 states Lane was shot through the head, his brains being contained within his hat. It was thought he 'was rather elevated with Drink', so resisted the robbers who then shot him. Reference supplied by Gillian Williamson on 24/2/2012
