Entered army as a cornet in General Burgoyne's Regiment; resigned commission on marriage; procured appointment in Bow Street Office under Sir John Fielding and ultimtately became Chief Magistrate of the police in London; knighted for his public services 1797; author; died 7 Apr. 1811 at Bath, aged 83 (Baker I, 412)
