University education at King's College, Aberdeen (see 'Alumni and graduates in arts of the Aberdeen Colleges' placing him in the class of 1682-6; AM 15 July 1686 Patricius Gordon, Merniensis. This locates him in the former county of Kincardine, fairly near Aberdeen, but not conclusive.)
(It is tempting to see him as one of the two sons of James Gordon, pastor of Rothiemay, eminent cartographer (himself the son of Robert Gordon, antiquarian and cartographer) but so far this cannot be backed up. It seems fairly certain that this Patrick Gordon was the author of the much circulated 'Geography Anatomized' publ. in London first in 1693 and in 20 editions to 1760 as his second dedication of a later edition of the book was to the earl of Coventry, residing at Abberly of which PG was vicar - hence the view that he might be related to other eminent Gordon cartographers.
NB Thomas Hearne appears to be confused as to who the author was, whether he was the same Patrick Gordon who had been his tutor at Bray School and who was a professor of Hebrew at Aberdeen - the dates of that man do not fit.
