Listed in 1592 as amongst 'no graduates, but preachers, honest men'.
He was one of 17 clergymen in 1590 signatory to, 'The manifolde Enormities of the Ecclesiasticall state in the most partes of the Countie of Lancaster; and many of them in som partes also of Cheshire'.
In 1604 he had been described as minister of Disley and chaplain to Sir Peter Legh of Lyme, who placed the MI in the chapel which described Sumner (in Latin) as
'Adorned with letters, faithful, pious, wise,
...
Well stored with arts, in them he found relief.
He d. 21 Sept. 1606 and was buried at Disley on 24 Sept. he was then described as 'preacher of the word at Disley' in the register.
