  His father, Charles Knollis, was self-styled 'Earl of Banbury', Charles' father having assumed that title (which had become officially extinct in 1632 but remained contested); the clerical career of Francis, although the dating looks strange could work if he was ordained before attending university - ordained priest in London by Winchester aged only 18; then V of Burford in 1771 on the death of his father who was vicar there; then immediately matriculating at Magdalen Hall, by this time being 27 years old - no degree is recorded.
