  For Abbot's career, see Oxford DNB, and also his letter to Richard Baxter of 21.07.1650 in which he recalls that he spent 23 years at Cranbrook and has now served seven years in Hampshire. He was also chaplain to Archbishop George Abbot and to Bishop Walter Curle of Winchester 'yet always hated the rigid courses and weaknesses of both their wayes'. A dear friend was Archbishop Abbot's brother, Bishop Robert Abbot of Salisbury, though he was no relative. Abbot describes himself as a conformable puritan who underwent not overwent conformity (N.H.Keeble and G.F. Nuttall eds. 'The Calendar of the Correspondence of Richard Baxter' i. [Oxford, 1991], pp. 58-61).
