Adm. (age 18) at KING'S, a scholar from Eton, Feb. 5, 1756. S. of John [and Sarah]. B. 1736, at Eton, Bucks. Bapt. there June 26, 1737. ' Matric. Easter, 1756; Craven Scholar, 1757; B.A. 1760; M.A. 1763; D.D. (per Lit. Reg.) 1774. Fellow, 1759-73. He was educated by the favour of Edward Barnard (see D.N.B.) at Eton and under the same protection at King's. Assistant Master at Eton, 1760-73; Head Master, 1773-91. R. of Scaldwell, Northants., 1774-1804. Canon of Windsor, 1782-91; retired. Provost of Eton, 1791-1809. Left £1000 to the University to found a Davies Classical Scholarship on the lines of the Craven Scholarship, the benefits of which he had himself enjoyed. To Eton, besides a provision for task and declamation prizes, he bequeathed an Exhibition for a superannuated Eton Scholar. To King's College he left £2000 in augmentation of a fund for the purchase of advowsons. Died Dec. 5, 1809. Buried at Eton. (Eton Coll. Reg.; D.N.B.)
