A scholar of ability; devoted himself to philological research connected especially with the older Latin classics; accumulated material for a philological work on the Early History of the Latin language; studied the Teutonic dialects of modern Europe. Corresponded with eminent mathematicians and gathered material for an introduction to the more difficult parts of the higher calculus. Contributed articles to philosophical journals. Began a tour on the continent for his health. Died Jan. 17, 1820, of a fever, at Naples. (G. Mag., 1820, II. 635.)
