VENN: Matriculated sizar from EMMANUEL COLLEGE, Easter, 1615. Son of a poor Huntingdonshire glover. Born at Godmanchester, c. 1594. B.D. 1629 ( Lit. Reg.). Ord. deacon (London) 19 Dec. 1619, age 24; ;BA; resident at Clare, Suffolk; priest, 12 March 1619/20. Curate of Wethersfield, Essex. Vicar of Finchingfield, 1625. Preacher at St Margaret's, Westminster, 1642. Chaplain to a regiment of the Earl of Essex. Chaplain at Holmby House during the King's imprisonment there. Member of Westminster Assembly. Town preacher at Ipswich, 1651. A leading advocate for a reformed episcopacy and liturgy. Took part in the production of the famous pamphlet Smectymnus; Author, Sermons, etc. Died 19 Nov. 1655. Buried in Westminster Abbey, but remains removed in 1661.
Described as now Curate of Wethersfield when ordained priest, 12/3/1619-20.
