VENN: Matric. sizar from TRINITY, Michs. 1613. S. of Thomas Dyckwood, alias Peters. B. at Foy, Cornwall. B.A. 1617-8; M.A. 1622. Ord. deacon (London) Dec. 23, 1621, age 24; priest, June 18, 1623. Schoolmaster at Laindon, Essex. Lecturer at St Sepulchre's, London. Travelled in Holland and Germany, 1629; became assistant to Rev. Dr William Ames of the Separatist English Church in Rotterdam, c. 1632-5. Emigrated to New England, 1635. Pastor at Salem, Massachusetts, 1636. Interested himself in the civil affairs of the colony as a supporter of the Winthrop theocratic faction in suppressing prominent dissenters. Returned to England, 1641, and became a prominent Independent. Chaplain in the Parliamentary Army, 1644-9; served as confidential and publicity agent for Warwick, Fairfax and Cromwell. Official preacher at Whitehall, 1650. Published reports on the campaigns in the Civil War. Executed as a regicide, Oct. 16, 1660. (D.N.B.; J. G. Bartlett.)
