VENN: Adm. pens. aged 19 at TRINITY 5 Jul. 1704; son of Stephen of Horsmonden, Kent; born there; school Westminster; matric. 1704; scholar 1705; BA 1707/8; MA PETERHOUSE 1711; fellow Peterhouse 1710-15; ordained deacon (Peterborough) 14 Jun. 1712. (Perhaps) Master of Ashford Grammar School 1712-49; R of Boughton Aluph, Kent 1731-49; V of Chilham and R of Warehorne; died 1749; father of John (1727) (TA Walker)
Delay in becoming priest can be explained by the original charter of Ashford Grammar School forbidding headmaster being in orders (though he was in deacon's orders) but offer of benefice led to his priesting. The online history of the Grammar school points up the prohibition and remarks on the fact that it was not observed in Bate's case.
