  VENN: B.A. 1542-3. S. of Charles, of Bawtry, Yorks. B. there. M.A. 1545; B.D. from Trinity, 1553-4. One of the original Fellows of Trinity, 1546. Six-preacher, Canterbury, 1556. Went to Rome, 1558, where he was created D.D. Sent to England in 1568, by the Pope, to report on the state of affairs. One of the chief instigators of the Northern rebellion, 1569. Afterwards at Louvain and Rheims. Arrested at Rome for intriguing with others against Queen Elizabeth, 1580. Brother of Anthony (1548). (Cooper, II. 10; D.N.B.)
