S John of Thorney, Cambridge, gent; MAGD HALL, m 19/10/1816, aged 25.
Confused in some online sites with man of same name, same birth year, also CMS missionary(see CCEd ID 130797).
Clarification 2011 on finding of lost documents incl. poetic writings - see "Dr Rajpal K. de Silva's Book of an Original Manuscript of 1841'. Also the Benjamin Bailey Scrapbook 1817-1849: (MS Eng 1461, Houghton Library, Harvard University: contains letters from Herbert Marsden, Bp of Peterborough which confirm this was man who was at Dallington and Gayhurst before he left England for in France and then as CMS missionary to Ceylon.
De Silva's research confirms born 5 Jun. 1791 in Lincolnshire (now Cambs); that he was at Magdalen Hall 1816 aged 25 (where he shared rooms with the poet, John Keats, with whom he had a close friendship for many years, spending much time in Cumberland (hence original curacy at Orton?); in 1829, posted to Ceylon by CMS as senior colonial chaplain; in 1847 was Archdeacon of Colombo. He was a poet - see e.g. 'Poetical Sketches of the Interior of Ceylon.' Died 1853.
