Adm. pens. at CAIUS, May 7, 1801. Of Suffolk. [S. of John, bookseller and instrument maker, of Ipswich; for some account of the research leading to this conclusion see St John's Coll. Adm., IV. 154.] School, (?) Ipswich Grammar. Migrated to St John's, Oct. 20, 1801; matric. Michs. 1801; B.A. 1805; M.A. 1808. Ord. deacon (Lincoln) Oct. 6, 1805; priest, Dec. 13, 1807. Appears to have started a school at the Manor House, Stoke Newington, Middlesex, c. 1806. Edgar Allan Poe, the American poet, was one of his pupils, 1817-20; Bransby is said to be the prototype of William Wilson in Poe's story of that name. Lecturer at Stoke Newington, 1814-25; served on many village committees. Head Master of King's Lynn Grammar School, 1825-50. Chairman of the Board of Guardians at King's Lynn and of the Court of Requests. F.L.S., F.S.A., 1820. R. of Testerton, Norfolk (a sinecure worth about £12 a year) 1845-57. Married Elizabeth, dau. of Robert Reynolds, R. and patron of Boulge with Debach, Suffolk, 1805. Died Mar. 5, 1857, aged 74, at King's Lynn. Brother of the next. (Venn, II. 137; St John's Coll.
