Originally apprenticed to a shoemaker in Penrith and spent all his spare time in working sums with an awl on leather: Lord Brougham noticed him and had him educated.] School, Sedbergh. ' Matric. Michs. 1827; Scholar, 1830; B.A. (2nd Wrangler) 1831; 2nd Smith's Prize. Migrated to Jesus, Apr. 1831; Fellow of Jesus, 1832-42; M.A. 1834. Proctor, 1841. F.R.S., 1839. F.R.A.S., 1836. Ord. deacon (Rochester, Litt. dim. from Ely) Feb. 16, 1834; priest (Carlisle, Litt. dim. from Ely) June 21, 1834; V. of St Clement's, Cambridge, 1835-7. Removed to Cheltenham, 1855, where he took private pupils. A distinguished mathematician and a good classical scholar. Had a marvellous memory; it was said that when he left Sedbergh he could repeat 20 Greek plays by heart. Author, Solutions of Trigonometrical and Geometrical Problems, etc. Died Feb. 17, 1887, aged 76, at Cheltenham. Brother of Robert (above). (Sedbergh Sch.
