VENN: Matric. sizar (age 21) at CHRIST'S, June, 1575. B. at Barton, Northants. Ord. deacon (London) Dec. 1580; priest, Dec. 1581. V. of Ridge, Herts., 1581-7. V. of Hinton St George, Somerset, 1587-1616. A strong puritan. Arrested by the Court of High Commission on a charge of libel, 1614; found guilty and deprived of his orders. Subsequently charged with treason and tortured with the object of drawing a statement from him. Tried at Taunton and sentenced to death, 1615. Died in gaol, Mar. 27, 1616. (Peile, I. 133; D.N.B.)
