The Carlisle Patriot 28/12/186 noted his death and noted curacy under Dr James, his son John James, and then Fergus Graham, 'during which time Mr Nichol ever conducted himself with such serenity of manners and unaffected piety as to not only endear himself to his flock he had the oversight of but to all those who were particularly acquainted with him'
