Adm. at KING'S, a scholar from Eton, Dec. 15, 1807. Only s. of the Rev. Edward (1761). B. May 7, 1789, at Burnham, Bucks. ' Matric. Lent, 1808; B.A. 1812; M.A. 1815; D.D. (per Lit. Reg.) 1835. Fellow, 1810-35. Private tutor to three sons of the Earl of Shrewsbury. Assistant Master at Eton, 1814-34; Head Master, 1834-53; Provost, 1853-62. Suppressed montem, 1847. Helped to start the school library. Among his pupils was Henry Hallam. Mr Gladstone said of him: He
for the first time inspired me with a desire to learn and to do. Restoration of College chapel was carried out under him as Head Master. Great conversationalist and book-collector. Student of ancient and modern languages, known as the English Mezzofanti. R. of Ewhurst, Sussex, 1835-54. V. of Mapledurham, Oxon., 1854-62. R. of Farnham Royal, Bucks., 1854, but never resided there, and resigned the same year. Author, Poems, privately printed.
