During his mastership extensive improvements to the Lodge were undertaken, and a strip of waste land, purchased from the Corporation, was added to the Fellows' Garden. A man of [p.67] singular good sense with the charm of an old time courtesy. In early life he had been among the English travellers detained in France by Napoleon, and took pleasure in relating anecdotes of the Emperor. Benefactor to his college.
