Adm. pens. at JESUS, May 29, 1805. S. of Richard [Dixon; assumed, by Royal Licence, 1805, the surname and arms of Cranmer], Capt., 85th Regt. of Foot [and Esther Maria, dau. of James Cranmer, of Mitcham, Surrey]. B. at Mortlake, Surrey. School, Chiswick (Dr Horne). ' Matric. Michs. 1805; Scholar and Exhibitioner, 1806; LL.B. 1811. Ord. deacon (Ely) June 8, 1808; priest (Sarum, Litt. dim. from Ely) Dec. 20, 1808; C. of Whittlesey, Cambs. V. of Mitcham, Surrey, 1824-8; succeeded to the manor of Mitcham which was purchased in 1652 by Robert Cranmer, merchant, of London. The claim of this family to be descended from the Archbishop is examined in detail by Edmond Chester Waters in The Chesters of Chicheley, II. 420 and declared to be one of those genealogical problems of which no one has hitherto proposed a satisfactory solution: thus the pedigree given in Manning and Bray is discredited. Died Dec. 1828.
