Adm. (age 17) at KING'S, a scholar from Eton, Mar. 30, 1753. [3rd s. of Richard, of Abergavenny. B. at Gloucester.] Bapt. Aug. 12, 1734. ' Matric. Easter, 1753; B.A. 1757; M.A. 1760; D.D. 1773. Fellow, 1756-61. Adm. at the Inner Temple, Dec. 6, 1752. Assistant Master at Eton, 1760-71; Fellow, 1771-81; Provost, 1781-91. R. of Whiston (with moiety of Denton), Northants., 1762-82; resigned. R. of Farnham Royal, Bucks., 1779. R. of Everdon, Northants., 1778-9; resigned. One of the King's Chaplains, 1772-91. Twice married and had issue: his 1st wife, Jane, d. 1776; his 2nd wife was a sister of Thomas Chamberlayne, Fellow of Eton. Madame D'Arblay wrote of him (Diary and Letters, 23 Nov. 1786). The Provost is very fat, with a large paunch and gouty legs. He is good humoured, loquacious, gay, civil, and parading. I am told, nevertheless, he is a poet, and a very good one. Author, Judah Restored, a poem in blank verse; A Poetical Essay on the Existence, the Attributes, and the Providence of God; A Poetical Epistle to Christopher Anstey, Esq., on the English Poets, chiefly those who have written in Blank Verse, etc. Died Dec. 5, 1791, at Eton.
