Son or Richard of Sowerby, Yorks. Bap. at Halifax 4 Dec 1603. Lincoln, Oxf., mc. 1624, BA 1627, MA 1629, BD 1641, DD 1649. Fellow of Lincoln 1629-47. Vice Chancellor 1650-2. R of Chastleton 1640. R of Newington 4 nov 1646 (Bodl., MS 324.18). Greenwood had a squint which gave opportunity for local wit. The college flourished under his government: in 1648 scarcely 20 fellows and scholars resident, in 1660 above 120. Began building new chapel and library. Criticized for putting his two nephews, Daniel and Nathaniel Greenwood, into fellowships at BNC. On leaving Oxford lived first at Studley and afterwards with his nephew at Steeple Aston, where he died 29 Jan 1673-4; buried in chancel, m.i. (Wood, v. ii. 157). Will, as of Studley, 11 Mar 1672-3: PCC 4 Apr 1674. Considerable property. No reference to wife or children. Land in Yorkshire to yield 40s yearly for te minister at Sowerby, 40s for poor there. £400 to BNC. £10 for Lincoln College library. 40s each to 10 of the most indigent ministers to be nominated by nephews Daniel and Nathaniel. Married, as of Chastleton, bach., aged 35, Grizill Hill, spin., age 24, by licence of 20 June 1642.
