FOSTER: (also Laygton) M.A. sup. 16 Dec. 1520, proctor 1521, canon of CARDINAL COLL. 1524-30, B.D. 15 July 1528, D.D. sup. 5 Feb. 1531-2, rector of All Cannings, Wilts. 1531, and of Cheriton, Hants. 1542 (perhaps canon of Westminster 1540), archdeacon of Salisbury 1544, etc. See Gutch, i.422; Foster's Ind. Eccles. & Fasti, i.80.
Very likely to be same as Dr Leighton at Flamsted (ID 147980);
Eastham parish registers show Edw. Leyhtone S. Theologie bac. appointed rector in 1538 which sounds like this man, and in Registers of Eastham he is mentioned as being rector and at same time Archdeacon of Salisbury; [Fasti gives dates for that 1539-46];
could also be dean of St Mary's College, Stafford 1538-1548 (see VCH, Staffs Vol. 3).
'History of the Antient Abbeys, Monasteries, Hospitals' Vol. 2 by John Stevens says he was 4th canon of the Cardinal's Foundation at Oxford (previously St Fridewide's Priory of Augustinian regular canons) from 1532-1545; and Strype puts him as canon of Westminister in 1540
