A soldier and captain (by sea and land) in the Swedish service. Visited Spain and Portugal and returned to England as Swedish envoy. Afterwards a captain in Fleetwood's regiment. Held a post in Jamaica. Returned to England, 1660. Ord. deacon (Lincoln) May 28; priest, May 31, 1662. V. of Boxted, Essex, 1662-4. R. of All Saints', Colchester, 1662-1708. P.C. of Wickes Priory, Essex. Licensed to preach at St Christopher-le-Stocks, 1662. Engaged in conflicts with the high church party and nonconformists, in the courts and in the press. Publicly recanted, 1684. Excluded from his living, 1685-8. Author, pamphlets, etc. Died Nov. 30, 1708. Buried at Colchester. M.I. in All Saints'. Will, P.C.C. (Venn, i. 381; D.N.B.)
