In 1789, on the death of Dr Chevallier, John Carr was nearly elected Master of the College. Carr and Pearce were tutors at the time; the former was leader of the Whigs, the latter of the Tories, the College being equally divided between the two parties. The election came to the seniority of eight, where again each got four votes; a third candidate, William Craven, was put up and elected. Married Anna, dau. of John Stubbs, of Ranton Abbey, Staffs., Oct. 1785. Died May 12, 1833, aged 87. Buried at Alfreton, Derbs. Brother of Thomas (1769). (Scott-Mayor, III. 692; Manchester Sch. Reg.)
