Literate. An entry in Venn which purports to be about this man is inaccurate. There is no evidence he was adm. at St John's as described; the details of birth, parents, relate to his uncle (John Adamthwaite CCEd ID 5219), although Venn entry points out the two should not be confused. The remainder of the entry could be correct as follows:
A John Adamthwaite was usher of the Grammar School Northampton and curate of Abington, Northampton 1809. Received honorary degree of DD from Marischal College Aberdeen 21 Sep. 1809: recommended by Bishop of Peterborough and others for degree of LLD or DD. Probably ordained deacon 28 June 1807, curate of St Peter's, Northampton.
This man was member of a family in which there were many schoolmaster/ clerics. See also John Adamthwaite, his uncle, CCEd ID 5219; a cousin William Adamthwaite CCEd ID 4434; and his brothers Joseph CCEd ID 83010 and William CCEd ID 84046.
Clarification can be obtained from the Adamthwaite family website - which appears to be based on sound research - see adamthwaitearchive.org.uk/rev-john-of winton and adamthwaite.one-name.net/seven-reverends. From the website it is possible to learn that this John Adamthwaite was the son of Thomas, husbandman and Mary (Pearson); was born about 1783 in Winton, Westmoreland; there is some evidence that before 1809 he may have been a teacher at Bramham near Wetherby, also in Chester; that he ran a academy in Winton from 1818 to 1839 in which year he died (5 Jun.) will proved in 1839
